SSGC: Firehouse Charity

6 12 2010

Talk about fun!! There were 18 of us this year. I had only met 3 of the girls before the charity drive, but everyone was super cool and fun. Everyone baked/brought some sort of goody. For example I made Peanut butter cookies, Anna made pepperoni bread, another girl brought buffalo chicken  cheese dip with chips, and someone else brought summer sausage, cheese and crackers. So we had a good variety of edible gifts. We met at Kitty Fontaine’s house (no it’s not her real name!). Dolly Lombardo and I helped finish up making delicious Pineapple, Mint, Gin punch and some Ricotta Cheese and Herb dip. Kitty already had a smorgasbord of delights prepared, including Black bean Chili and Jalapeno Cornbread for when we got back! Once everyone arrived, and the Trolley arrived, we loaded the Trolley full with the goodies and some beer and wine for good measure.

Once the Trolley was loaded with goodies, booze and beautiful girls dressed for cheer (aprons, Santa hats, stockings, dresses), we headed out to the first Firehouse.

The Firefighters were so stoked to see us! Apparently no one really thanks them for all that they do! We went to five separate firehouses around north west Chicago, leaving in our wake tables piled full of edible delights. A few tears slipped from excited, happy, thankful firemen.  The Firemen let us try on their coats (which weigh a ton!), boots, helmets and climb in the trucks! I took lots of photos! We had a great time getting to know, even if only briefly, some of the brave men and women of the Chicago Fire Department. Next time you see a firefight, say thanks. They deserve it!

The next charity on the agenda for the SSGC is Christmas presents for 40 LBGTQ teens, who have been thrown out of their homes and are now homeless. The goal is to get them all backpacks, socks, gloves, hats and anything else we can stuff into the backpacks for them.
